On Saturday, May 21, Corey Helford Gallery is pleased to present “Flight and Fable” featuring new works by three remarkable female artists from New Contemporary Fine Art Movement: Sarah Folkman, Krista Huot and Isabel Samaras.

On the main floor, Los Angeles artist Sarah Folkman will unveil her third exhibition with the gallery entitled “Experiments in Flight”. Featuring exotic woods such as Zebrawood, Rosewood, Wenge, Lacewood, and Sapele as her canvas, Folkman’s new body of work unfolds with an exploration of human uncertainty and ambivalence born from the intense desire to flee. Continuing with narratives about the relationship between humans and animals, as well as the great solace she finds in the existence of birds, Folkman adds about her new work, “I love painting skin, layers and layers of it, so there are more human figures with birds in supporting roles.”

Joining Corey Helford Gallery for her third exhibition, Krista Huot will present “Changelings”, a new body of work featuring her largest paintings to date. Building upon her layered narratives, Huot adds an unexpected twist with the introduction of pop culture references and British folklore. Allegories drawn from fairy tales are joined with video game icons, Led Zeppelin allusions, and cannabis culture to create a psychedelic storybook exploring environmental and social themes. Rendered from a palette of walnut oils, Huot’s paintings are created with eco-friendly materials and hemp canvases.

San Francisco artist Isabel Samaras’ highly-anticipated exhibition “Heavy Gretel” will debut in a special salon on the second floor of the gallery. Witty, mysterious, and tender narratives that are classical in technique and pop in content, Samaras’ paintings connect childhood themes with modern day icons. For “Heavy Gretel”, her clever visual storytelling is populated with birds, raccoons and deer as well as delightful hidden meanings where a honey badger represents Grandmaster Flash and a chicken bone becomes a lucky charm. For this body of work Samaras’ process takes a new direction, employing a more organic, intuitive approach to her imagery as well as dark backgrounds to illuminate her captivating subjects.

Open to the public, the reception for “Flight and Fable” will take place on Saturday, May 21 from 7 to 10pm and the show will be on view until June 8, 2011
