It's sounds like a dream to stay in a hotel on an island, but in Stockholm this could become reality. It's actually quite easy, just book Skeppsholmen Hotel on the homonym lush island. Don't worry you don't have to rely on any boat to explore the city, the island is connected by a bridge to the center, that you will reach in a 5 min bike ride or 10 min walk. I say bike because the hotel has a pool of bikes you can borrow and that made my stay so enjoyable and my exploration in the city smooth. The building where I was sleeping used to be a military camp, then a prison for Russian soldiers, then a hospital for plague and now thanks to the new design it's like heaven. Modern design of Claesson Koivisto Rune contrasts with the historic 17th-century building. The hotel is constituted of three buildings, it means that once you've checked in you don't need to go through the reception every time you go back to your room. It gives you more a feeling of staying in a nice apartment. When the weather was good I even had my breakfast on the terrace with view on the stunning waterfront. Art is literally in the garden of the hotel. As soon as you step out you can see Niki de Saint Phalle's and Jean Tinguely's The Paradise displayed in the grass. And it's not a coincidence, the Moderna Museet is located behind the Skeppsholmen Hotel. It is one of Europe's most distinguished collection of modern and contemporary art with key works from the hands of Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Robert Rauschenberg, Meret Oppenheim and many others. Containing paintings, sculptures, installations, film and video, drawings and graphic art, the Collection comprises Swedish and international art from the entire 19th century until today. After being exposed to so much genius you might get hungry and then I'll recommend to to do how I did to go back to the hotel and get roe deer meatballs, served with pickled cucumber, ligonberry compote, juniper berry cream sauce and almond potato puree. Super Swedish, super yummy! Once you'll have eaten and feel guilty about your diet, you'll be happy to know that the hotel hosts a fitness that is open 24/7. Skeppsholmen is part of my all time favorite hotel experience. Live the dream, stay on an island!
