6 Columbus Lobby
Ideally located on the Upper West side of Manhattan at Columbus Circle, 6 Columbus is 60 Thompson in Soho’s cute younger sister. The design throughout the hotel is reminiscent of an early 70’s basement recreational room ("rec room") with shag carpeting, wood paneled walls and swanky furniture throughout the hotel in the rooms and the lobby.

After arriving at 6 Columbus at 6am after a grueling overnight flight from Los Angeles the staff was very friendly in letting me know that although a room wasn’t yet available because they had sold out the night before, that they would try their best to get me a room as soon as possible. So we left our luggage with the friendly bellman and decided to go for a walk to Central Park which is located across the street from 6 Columbus. Although the weather was rainy and gloomy, the temperature was actually quite nice at 56 degrees and I feel that this type of weather suits New York just fine the same way a drizzle suits London perfectly. So we grabbed our umbrellas and off we went for a long walk up from the lower west side of Central Park up to Strawberry Fields and John Lennon’s IMAGINE plaque which had beautiful flowers strewn all around it (and we also made a quick little detour to the Dakota building where John Lennon lived and died –over the top touristy, yes –but I am a huge Beatles fan) and then all the way up to the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis lake and back down to the lower east side of the Park as we passed hundreds of runners in the NYC marathon. I was so tired after my long flight and at least an hour had passed before we decided to return to 6 Columbus.

The great news was that our room was ready. We took the elevator up to our room which was a suite with a separate living area, bedroom area and of course a bathroom. It was even more shagadelic looking than the lobby with a huge white faux cowhide carpet, vintage styled bright red couch, a plastic table and chairs. The plastic table and chairs reminded me of the scene in the the movie, The Graduate where the old man whispers in Dustin Hoffman’s ear “One word Benjamin: Plastics”. The only thing that gave the room that ultra modern feel was the flat screen TV, I just loved the vibe of the room. The bathroom was fully stocked with products by one of my favorite brands, Kiehls. The bedroom area had a 2nd massive sized flat screen television as well as great magazines including V and Interview. I felt right at home. So I took a hot shower, took a short nap and woke up feeling refreshed and ready for the rest of the day. 6 Columbus also has a Blue Ribbon Sushi restaurant and bar. So we sauntered down to the restaurant and enjoyed some cocktails before heading out to a nearby Greek Restaurant, Kefi on Columbus Avenue. Next time I stay at 6 Columbus I will definitely have to try Blue Ribbon Sushi, I’ve heard lots of great things about it.

After dinner at Kefi we came back to the hotel room, feeling quite exhausted and ready to catch up on the sleep we missed out on the night before. The bed was so comfy and just screamed of cleanliness with its pure white sheets. We turned the big flat screen TV on and watched an MTV show called “STEVE-O: Demise and Rise”, had a few laughs and drifted off to sleep. I ? New York and I love 6 Columbus Hotel.
