Tahoe City Winter Skiing run at Squaw Valley
Tahoe City Winter Skiing run at Squaw Valley

Tahoe City is a epic heaven for young children. Over a dozen ski resorts surround the Lake Tahoe area on both the Nevada and California sides of the lake. Fortunate for me, My kids and I get to spend the entire 2017 winter season in Lake Tahoe – some calling it the best winter season in the last decade! So here is my list of things to do with kids in the North Lake Tahoe and surrounding area. Keep in mind that this list will be updated as more things will come to mind.

1. Ski Resorts

Squaw, Alpine, Northstar, Sugar Bowl, Mount Rose, and Diamond Peak ski resorts are the major ones in the north Lake Tahoe area.  There are kids ski and snowboard lessons, music at the base, a lodge for kids to hang out in while you do a few runs even. Squaw has a little playroom and arcade for kids in Olympic lodge. Fresh baked cookies are in the lodge too! Restrooms have changing tables which is a big plus. Northstar has a village and ice skating rink for kids. Smaller resorts include Donner Ski Ranch, Homewood, and Boreal Ski Resorts.

There is tons of traffic on the weekends in Tahoe during the winter so I recommend just going to the closest resort with what you are looking for. Always leave early and I try to be out the door by 7 a.m. since it takes some additional time to get he gloves, goggles, hats, jackets, ski/snow pants, long socks, boots, snacks, milk.

2. Sledding Hills

In Tahoe City there is the Tahoe City Winter Sports Park behind Bank of America, Granilbakken close by, and a small sledding hill just past Bridgtender.

3. Rideout Community Center

The Rideout Community Center is operated by the TCPUD and has different programs such as cooking classes and wee play time. The kids love the basketball court, fuseball tables, and kid playroom with a Mecca of toys.

4. Movies

The Arthaus Cinema in Tahoe City offers daily shows along with the movie theatre in Incline Village. There are also many theatres in Reno like the one downtown by the river and the theatre at Grand Sierra Resort with $4 tickets and nice staff!

5. Ice Skating

There is a rink at the Tahoe Winter Park in Tahoe City, Truckee Community Center, Northstar, South Lake Tahoe Community Center and Heavenly Village in the south shore.

6. Swimming Pool

Truckee has a great indoor swimming pool at its community center. Many hotels also have a heated swimming pool in Tahoe and its surrounding areas such as Harveys South Lake Tahoe, Harrahs South Lake Tahoe, and Atlantis Reno. Call ahead to see if your hotel’s pool is open during the winter because some hotels like Grand Sierra Resort’s  pool is under construction for winter 2017 and is not open.

7. Ballet Classes
