M Café offers delicious macrobiotic cuisine that vegetarians, meat-eaters and omnivores will all enjoy. The fresh, balanced dishes are made from top-quality ingredients and prepared daily. While they build on the insights of macrobiotics founder Michio Kushi and eschew refined sugars, eggs, dairy, red meat or poultry, the dishes will likely appeal to all tastes.

The restaurant’s two Los Angeles locations, in Beverly Hills and on Melrose Avenue, offer a full breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. Among the highlights for breakfast are the breakfast enchilada, which includes scrambled tofu, tempeh bacon and avocado, as well as the vegan benedict, with steamed kale, tomato and tempeh bacon covered in soy hollandaise on a whole-grain baguette.  For lunch and dinner, M Café’s extensive menu includes a range of delicious soups, sandwiches and salads. Since fish is fine for macrobiotic diets, the restaurant also offers a sushi menu, including standards such as spicy tuna and California role, as well as special items like the tuna tataki inari and shiitake avocado roll.  The Chili Cheese Fries are as decadent yet healthy -an oxymoron if there ever was one.  The Club sandwich tastes so good that you forget that it’s suitable for vegetarians.  All in all the M Café consistently offers healthy food without ever sacrificing taste.

The café’s patisserie serves cakes, scones, tarts and cookies, as well as to-die-for cupcakes, macaroons and other desserts from Babycakes, New York City’s macrobiotic dessert mecca. Outdoor and indoor seating is available, and the dark wood interior of M Café offers a similar feeling of nourishment as the food itself. The restaurant even employs a Feng Shui master, Kwai Lan Chan Cook from Imperial Feng Shui to ensure a pleasant atmosphere.

The food is devised and overseen by corporate executive chef Shigefumi Tachibe, a Kushi Macrobiotic Chef Premier who has worked with Chaya Restaurants—which owns M Café—since 1981. He is assisted by consulting chef Lee Gross, who has been studying macrobiotics, traditional cuisines and alternative health since 1999 and has worked with health conscious celebrities including Gwyneth Paltrow.
